Essay contest on environment opens for university students

HCMC – University students throughout Vietnam are from today invited to enter the Saigon Times – Premier Oil environmental essay contest on protection and enhancement of the environment in Vietnam’s emerging economy, the organizers announced yesterday.

The contest, co-organized by The Saigon Times Weekly and the British-based Premier Oil Vietnam Offshore B.V Company, aims at raising awareness about the need for balance between environment protection and sustainable development, said Phil MacLaurin, country manager of the Premier Oil Company.

“It’s important for students to have imaginative but realistic ideas and solutions for environmental protection in Vietnam, and the organizers will not limit the students’ ideas so that they can express as wide as possible their enhancement and protection ideas in their English essays,” Phil said at a press conference to announce the contest.

Huynh Cam Tung, managing editor of The Saigon Times Weekly, said prizes would be awarded based on ideas about environmental issues and English writing, with VND20 million for the first prize, VND10 million for the second prize, VND7 million for the third prize and seven consolation prizes worth VND1 million each.

“Winning essays will be published in The Saigon Times Weekly and The Saigon Times Daily. However, contestants should write 500 to 1,000 words in English,” Tung said.

The jury for the contest includes two members of the Premier Oil Company, one each from The Saigon Times Weekly, Environmental Resources Management Company and Apollo Education and Training Center.

To encourage students to join the contest, the Premier Oil Company will invite the top three prize winners to have a three – month internship at Premier Oil Office in HCMC.

The organizers plan to arrange similar contests annually with different topics.

Essay submissions must be postmarked before January 9 and the prize ceremony will be on February 27.
